Advanced Irish Dancing with Gillian
As part of Theatre Week 2011, Dramsoc and English Soc are teaming up to bring you a very special workshop on Shakespeare. Led by Ashley Strand, the workshop won't focus on analysing his plays from an academic point of view - but with a view to perform them! The first half of the workshop will be devoted to discussion of this particular approach to the Bard, whereas the second half will be taken up with working on participants' monologues. (it could be your one and only chance to be Iago, Macbeth, Rosalind, Lear or Hamlet. 'Gwan, ya will.)
More information is here: https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=192292640794446&ref=mf
SHAKESPEARE IS NOT LITERATURE!
The first folio of Shakespeare's plays was published by two of his colleagues in 1623 -- seven years after Shakespeare's death! It seems Shakespeare was not terribly concerned about his plays in posterity. His plays were never written to be read. They were written to be performed! Access to his stories and language, understanding of Shakespeare's work, is more readily gained through the experien...ce of bringing his characters to life as an actor than through any other means.
Shakespeare has been put into old dusty books, in old dusty libraries and classrooms, introduced by and appended with critical commentary of such stupefying density and turgidity that most people would rather do fluid dynamics problems without a calculator than read any of his plays, much less perform them! If only people knew how wonderfully turgid Shakespeare can be when performed! How overflowing with dynamic fluids! Take a look at Juliet's speech in Act III, scene ii, lines 17-21 before you come to class. Think about it!
Shakespeare is sex and murder, power and money, betrayal and revenge, love and hate, joy and sorrow. We demystify his unfamiliar language and free his poetry from preciousness when we tell his stories in those terms. First part of class will be a brief discussion of my approach to his work. Second part of class will include work on student monologues applying the following principles:
Telling the story
Active choices
Physical engagement -- using the whole body to act
Outward rather than inward focus
Juxtaposition of opposites
Operative words
Dress for movement is recommended, even for those without monologues (give yourself the option).
This workshop will be led by Ashley Strand.

Richard III (1995) Directed By Richard LoncraineDirected By Richard Loncraine. This unique adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Richard III" switches the story's setting from the 1480s to the 1930s and imagines what a fascist. coup in England might have been like. Despite the change in milieu, the story remains the same. The film's many offbeat touches include Richard giving his famous "winter of our discontent" speech as a public political address, and uttering his classic line "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" when his jeep gets stuck in mud.

Macbeth is re-imagined as a samurai in feudal Japan in director Akira Kurosawa's classic adaptation of the Shakespearean tragedy. Familiar with Orson Welles's more faithful adaptation, Kurosawa chose to place a more personal stamp on his version by translating the events and characters to historical Japan. The shift to Japanese settings is seamless, creating a historically accurate & resonant work with a culturally distinct visual style.

Sixteen of Ireland's up and coming comedians have agreed to go mano a mano, in a comedic war of wits until there's only one left standing. This glorious victor will walk away with the spoils of war, bragging rights, a bag of cash for themselves and filthy looks from their loser friends. Not to mention the beautiful Toilet Duck Award.
This years contenders: Ian Perth, Sean Hegarty, Marcus O'Laoire, Conor O'Toole, Greg Marks, John Brennan, Kevin Lockard, David Hurley, Ben Buckley, Ed Salmon, Rory O'Hanlon, Aidan Killian, Ruardhri Ward, Adam Burke, Trevor Browne & Lucy Moffatt
Here's the plan of battle.
The Sixteen comics will assemble in the Roisin Dubh. Steve Cummins will host the evening and do his damnedest to whip the audience into a froth of unimaginable glee.
Each comedian has just two minutes to impress you, the audience, so it's best jokes first, if someone falters, they're gone after two minutes. It's fast and furious guerrilla comedy. Proper hit and run stuff until there are only two comics left.
In our final round these two fine warriors of wit have five minutes each to impress you. The loser should slink off into the night while the winner sobs "You love me, you really really love me." in a glorious pastiche of some tit at the Oscars years ago.

For the second year in a row, the NSS will be marching on to the Presidents Lawn, joined by other cardboard warriors from around the world, and they will launch the biggest cardboard battle in the history of Galway, and mankind. Mankind, that word should have a new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We must be united in our common interests. And perhaps, it's sheer coincidence that today is the 24th of February, and you will once again be fighting be your freedom, not from tyranny, oppression or persecution, but from annihilation! we're fighting for our right to live, to exist! And should we win the day, the 24th of February will no longer be known as just another day, but as the day when NSS declared in one voice "We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! TODAY, WE CELEBRATE OUR INDEPENDANCE DAY!"

NUI Galway Student Enterprise Awards
The Students' Union, with the support of the UMT, has launched the NUI Galway Student Enterprise Awards. An overview of the awards is available at: http://www.su.nuigalway.ie/site/view/2468/.
The awards invite all students to submit an idea for a new business, a social enterprise or an artistic-minded initiative. These ideas will then be judged and six finalists will be given the chance to take their ideas forward and to set about implementing their projects with the assistance of a financial allowance of EUR500 and of an assigned mentor with relevant expertise. There will be three finalists from the business category and three from the arts and social categories.
The overall winner will receive a direct investment of EUR15,000 in their project to really help get it off the ground in addition to further guidance and mentoring to help bring the project forward. Two runners up prizes, each valued at EUR2,000, will also be awarded. The goal of the competition is that every entrant has taken the first steps of launching their idea and so each idea will be given the opportunity to flourish.
