NUIG Irish Studies Society is happy to invite its members to a special night at the theatre. The Performance Corporation theatre company brings to the Town Hall Theatre Slatteryâs Sago Saga. Adapted by Arthur Riordan from the unfinished comic masterpiece by Flann OâBrien, Slatteryâs Sago Saga tells the story of Tim Hartiganâs quiet life at Poguemahone Hall which is shattered by the arrival of a Scotch woman with a ridiculously evil plan. Utter confusion awaits in the shape of a politically-correct Leprechaun, a beautiful typist and a tycoon T.D. bent on bankrupting the country. One part carnival, one part surreal satire on modern Ireland, it is an unforgettable theatrical adventure.
âArthur Riordan has cooked up a monstrous pudding of a comic play.â- Irish Independent

There is broad consensus that decarbonising the power sector is a crucial step towards creating a more sustainable economy. The power system in Ireland is set to undergo a major transition from centralised thermal generation to distributed renewable generation sources. This will motivate significant development of the transmission system and require a sea change in the way the power system is operated. Ireland will also need to develop links to neighbouring electricity markets to both facilitate renewable energy export and to maintain security of supply. The presentation from EirGrid will discuss their current role as well as their contribution towards the transition to a decarbonised power system.

There will be a gathering somewhere in town when the EGM is over....!!!
The Civil Partnership Act 2010 was passed by both DĂĄil and Seanad in July of this year, and is expected to be fully enacted by early 2011. The Minister for Justice and Law Reform Dermot Ahern said: "This is one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation to be enacted since independence.", yet the Act continues to be the subject of much debate and discussion, both within the LGBT community in particular and across the wider populace.
What exactly is involved with the Civil Partnership Act, however, and what are its strengths and its limitations? While very little has been written on the subject from the point of view of academia as yet, GiG Soc is hoping to add to the discussion by hosting an audience with Dr. Anne Egan, lecturer in Law here in NUIG, in which the Act will be discussed, along with a legal interpretation of the provisions contained within, and a short question-and-answer session afterward.
Dr. Egan is a graduate of National University of Ireland, Galway where she was awarded a B.A in Legal Science, Sociology and Politics in 2003 and LL.B in 2004. She completed her PhD in 2008 on âThe Rights and Responsibilities of Fathers in Irish Family Lawâ. She was a tutor in the Faculty of Law from 2004-2006 and lectured part-time in Family Law in 2007-2008. She also has completed a Certificate in Part 1 Mediation training accredited to the Mediators Institute of Ireland. Anne was awarded a postgraduate certificate in Teaching and Learning in 2009 and is currently completing a module on "Civic Engagement" with the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, NUI, Galway. She currently lectures in Family Law, Sociology of Law, Law and Social Policy, Irish Legal Systems here in NUIG.
So come along if you have an interest in LGBT issues, law, equality and human rights or if you just want to find out more about what Civil Partnership will actually entail, and as usual people of all types are welcome to attend! If you'd like an icebreaker to meet you before the event, just email gigsoc@socs.nuigalway.ie, and we'd be happy to meet you! Social evening will follow.

And a bloody nice bloke to boot!

Recently seen on Des Bishops âJoy in da Hoodâ, this Ballymun based comic has a bright future ahead. Razor-sharp observation and laconic working class wit combine to produce an uproariously funny routine that will leave you clutching your sides, as well as your handbags.

The music pirates are going to destroy the music industry! Or are they?
The problem of piracy has been rising for the past 10 years, and the numbers of âpiratesâ are growing day by day yet the profits made by these companies have been constantly on the rise. It seems to be a victimless crime, yet music stars descend from their mansions to complain about small percentages of their revenue being removed.
Maybe piracy will bring purity back to the music industry putting live gigs and love of the music back to the forefront. Alternatively it could lead to the death of small industry and only allow the large scale companies to exist, killing independent input to music.
This Thursday at 7pm we ask the question, Music Piracy, friend or foe?
