Title: Energy & Economics; A scientific perspective in the era of Peak Oil
Speaker: James Glynn, ASPO-Ireland (Association for the Study of Peak Oil)
Abstract:
2008 is the year most people remember as being the year of the Beijing Olympics, collapse of subprime mortgages, housing bubbles, Lehman brothers collapse, financial meltdown and the genesis of financial crises that we are living through today. 2008 was also the year of maximum Oil price at $147/barrel and global energy production to-date. This talk will explore the interaction of Energy supply, Energy Return on Energy Invested, GDP growth and economic stability.
The talk will be quite numerate and will aim to ignite discussion on the question: In the era of Peak Oil are our fundamental economic assumptions still valid?

He was appointed Lecturer in American History at the University of Edinburgh in 2007. Quigley spent academic year 2009-10 in the United States on a Leverhulme Research Fellowship, researching at archives in Washington, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky. Quigley’s main research interests are in the American Civil War and its era, ca. 1846-1877. Other broad interests include nationalism, regionalism, the South, and placing U.S. history within international contexts. His first book, Shifting Grounds: Nationalism and the American South, 1848-1865, will be published by Oxford University Press in 2011. He is now working on a short, primary documents-based book entitled The Fourth of July and the Transformation of American Nationalism, 1846-1877, as well as a larger study of the American Civil War and the world.
This House Believes the Beautiful Game has Lost its Soul
Speakers: Jonathan Wilson (The Guardian), Phillipe Auclair (France Football)
This Thursday, the 14th of October, the Literary and Debating Society of NUI, Galway will be holding its football debate on the motion that ‘This House Believes the Beautiful Game has Lost its Soul’. Speaking on the motion will be Jonathan Wilson, respected journalist for the Guardian and Sports Illustrated and author of Inverting the Pyramid: A History of Football Tactics, and Phillipe Auclair, France Football’s England Correspondent and author of Cantona: The Rebel Who Would be King. The debate will analyse the direction of the most popular game in the world and whether money, power and deceit have taken the game away from its roots and its fans.
Football, the Beautiful game, is watched around the world and links people from all over the globe in their love of the game and their teams, both national and club. However, as money has flowed into the game accusations of the unfair play have emerged both on and off the pitch at every level of the game.
Respected clubs in some of the biggest leagues have been brought to the brink of extinction in recent years, other have been saddled with the unsustainable millstone of debt and other have been reduced to the playthings of billionaires.
Players now engage in gamesmanship such as diving, rough play and other forms of cheating to get ahead in the game and managers now go in and out of clubs with frightening speed. Even at the highest levels of FIFA itself, accusations of bribery and other corruption have been rife.
Set against the backdrop of the movement away from the true fans in the stands to the armchair fan, with increasing ticket prices and ever changing television orientated timetables for the bigger leagues, and the current debt and attendance problems of Ireland’s own domestic league, the Literary and Debating Society asks ‘Has the Beautiful Game Lost its Soul?’
BlazBlue is a traditional 2D fighter where two characters participate in a duel on a two dimensional plane. A round is called a "rebel" and one match can consist of one to five "rebels". To win a round, one player must either incapacitate the other by inflicting damage through various attacks to reduce health or by having more remaining health after the clock runs out if the rules of the match has one.
Every character has a weak, medium and strong attack. Also every character has a "unique" technique, called a Drive attack, which is different for each character. Those attacks are also known as "A", "B", "C" and "D". Various combos can be performed by every character through careful input of regular and drive attacks. A combo consists of two or more consecutive attacks that hit an opponent without them retaliating. As combos become longer, each attack will do less damage than normal to give the opponent a chance to retaliate. Grabs can be incorporated into combos also by pressing the "B" and "C" buttons at the same time. Occasionally, some attacks (e.g. Jin's Hirensou) will use portions of the player's heat gauge at the bottom of the screen. The heat gauge is filled by either dealing or receiving damage. When at a certain percentage, special moves called "distortion drives" can be performed. When a distortion drive is successfully performed and connects with the opponent, it deals massive damage and is visually flashier than normal attacks.
Along with attacks every character has two types of block. One is the regular block that can be broken with a "guard crush". That can be achieved by pushing the "guard libra" gauge all the way to the opponent's side through repeated attacks. If the opponent keeps blocking, then their guard can be broken, leaving them open for attack. The second type of block is a barrier block, which is initiated by blocking while holding the "A" and "B" buttons at the same time. A barrier block cannot be broken like a normal guard, but there is a limit on how long one can be held, which is indicated by the barrier gauge. If the barrier gauge empties, then the player will receive 150% damage until it regenerates to half-full.
