Dylan Evans is the author of several popular science books, including Emotion: The Science of Sentiment (Oxford University Press, 2001), Placebo: The Belief Effect (HarperCollins, 2003), and Emotion, Evolution and Rationality (Oxford University Press, 2004). After receiving his PhD in Philosophy from the London School of Economics, he did postdoctoral research in philosophy at Kingâs College London and in robotics at the University of Bath before moving the University of the West of England (UWE) where he was Senior Lecturer in Intelligent Autonomous Systems. He left UWE in July 2006 to conduct an innovative project in sustainable living in the Scottish Hightlands called the Utopia Experiment.
He writes regularly for The Guardian and has made frequent appearances on radio and television, and given numerous talks at festivals of science and literature. In 2001 he was voted one of the twenty best young writers in Britain by the Independent on Sunday , and was once described by the Guardian as âAlain de Botton in a lab coatâ. He is a member of the Health Decision Making Research Group, a Distinguished Supporter of the British Humanist Association, an Expert Faculty Member at The School of Life, a Member of the Ethics Advisory Board at the Lifeboat Foundation, and a Member of the British Fulbright Scholars Assocation.

From the 16th to the 25th of March, Deema Darawshy (a young Palestinian woman) and Sahar Vardi (a young Israeli woman) will be partaking in a speaking tour throughout Ireland. The women will be speaking about the current situations in Palestinian and Israel, the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign and how Irish people can become effective advocates for this conflict.
Sahar Vardi has been a peace activist since she was 12, she was raised in a home that taught her that equality and justice are at a premium. Today after having finished school, and spending 2 months in prison for being a contentious objector from the army, Sahar is full time activist in the eyes of many. She works for a Jerusalem municipal council member, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, New Profile, Anarchist Against the Wall, Shministim, and many many more. Sahar and some of her friends who are also contentious objectors are now working on a new educational brief for Israeli schools, which they feel don't promote critical thinking, instead serve as a tool to militarise the country. This is a clear objective in Israel as conscription is a huge part of the Israel life and psyche.
Deema Darawshy is a young Palestinian woman who was born within the 1948 borders. Deema was always interested in human rights issues but while studying in Hebrew University she got more involved with Ta Adam a Students for Human Rights group. Throughout the years Deema has been active with many organisations including B'Tselem, Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group and most recently working with HaMoked - Centre for the Defence of the Individual. Her work has led to her giving testimonies to the UN Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Practices Affecting Human Rights of the Palestinian People and Other Arabs in the Occupied Territories.

The theme of this year's conference is: "'I exist, therefore I am': Exploring personhood and dignity". This residential weekend will include a programme of expert international speakers in the fields of Bioethics, Philosophy, Human Rights, Post Abortion Trauma and much more. As well as listening to excellent speakers, the delegates will be able to converse with pro-life organisations from all over the world. This conference is an excellent opportunity for young people from across the globe to network and socialise, make friends and empower one another to spread the pro- life message. The cost for the weekend for student members of Life Society will be only 40 euros which includes food, accommodation and conference fees. If you would like to attend this fun-filled weekend, please contact Life Society or call/text Maria 0876217702 as soon as possible.
NUIG Life Society will conclude its pro-life creative competition for secondary school students, NUIG students, and the general public on 19 March. Artists in any genre (including, but not limited to, plays, films, paintings, poems, prose, drawings, music, sculptures, graphic designs, songs, photographs, engravings, and speeches) may submit original work into one of the three categories. Irish language submissions are especially welcome. Copies of the rules and entry forms are available in the Societiesâ Office, by e-mail, or by post.
A panel consisting of five Life Society committee members and five external judges will evaluate entries based on their artistic merit, their engagement with current issues, and their effectiveness in defending human life. The ideal submission should be moving, beautiful, and unique. The winning artist will receive a plaque as well as a cash prize of 150 euro. Additionally, Life Society may purchase the winning artwork or commission a new work on the theme of life upon mutual agreement, and all participants will have a chance to showcase their creations. Depending on the number of entries and level of public interest, the panel may decide to award a second prize in any individual category and/or to increase the amount awarded.
Since students who are well informed would be in a better position to create a powerful and relevant piece of art, members of Life Society will be available upon request to make presentations about the society, the pro-life art competition, and various life topics. For more information or to enter the competition âLife: The Ultimate Work of Artâ please contact Life Society, Societies Office, Ăras na Mac LĂ©inn, E-mail: lifesoc@socs.nuigalway.ie Phone: 0876217702 (auditor).

This is an informal knitting group - a chance to learn or improve your knitting skills, or just to de-stress and enjoy some quality time while knitting. So c’mon along! Bring your latest project. Facilitated by Anne Quinn and Adrienne Keane. All welcome.

There will be a Coffee morning in aid of Habitat for Humanity next Tuesday, 16th March from 10.30 – 12.00 noon in the Chapel Common Room. Donations of baked goods are greatly appreciated, all very welcome.
