On Thursday the 11th of March, the Literary and Debating Society will be hosting an Audience with Garry Hynes, founder and Artistic Director of the Druid Theatre Company. This event will take place in the Aula Maxima in the main Quadrangle of NUI Galway and will commence at 7pm.
Garry Hynes is a graduate of NUI Galway who has gone on to become one of the most accomplished and well respected individuals in Irish theatre. From her beginnings as a member of the NUIG Drama Society, Ms. Hynes went on to found the Druid Theatre Company and currently serves as it's Artistic Director. Over the last 30 years, Ms. Hynes has directed plays for the Abbey Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Exchange, Manchester, the Kennedy Center and the Royal Court Theatre, London. She was also the first female director to receive a Tony Award for Direction for 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane' in 1998. In 2004, she directed 'DruidSynge' which saw all six of J.M. Syngeâs plays performed in one day. Her production of 'The Playboy of the Western World' was described by the New York Times as the âhighlight not just of my theatre-going year but of my theatre-going lifeâ. She is a recipient of many other theatre awards, including The Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best Director and a Special Tribute Award for her contribution to Irish Theatre (2005) and the Freedom of the City of Galway (2006).
Ms. Hynes will be interviewed by Professor Adrian Frazier â an English Lecturer in NUIG and Director of the MA in Drama and Theatre Studies, and will deal with topics such as theatre in Galway and in Ireland, her recent involvement in the debate on arts funding, as well as discussing the role and influence of Irish theatre on the global stage. After the interview, there will be a questions and answer session, where members of the audience will have the opportunity to put questions to Ms. Hynes and Professor Frazier.

NUIG Life Society has launched (9 February) its pro-life creative competition for secondary school students, NUIG students, and the general public. Artists in any genre (including, but not limited to, plays, films, paintings, poems, prose, drawings, music, sculptures, graphic designs, songs, photographs, engravings, and speeches) may submit original work into one of the three categories. Irish language submissions are especially welcome. The closing date to submit entry forms is 12 March and the competition will conclude on 19 March. Copies of the rules and entry forms are available in the Societiesâ Office, by e-mail, or by post.
A panel consisting of five Life Society committee members and five external judges will evaluate entries based on their artistic merit, their engagement with current issues, and their effectiveness in defending human life. The ideal submission should be moving, beautiful, and unique. The winning artist will receive a plaque as well as a cash prize of 150 euro. Additionally, Life Society may purchase the winning artwork or commission a new work on the theme of life upon mutual agreement, and all participants will have a chance to showcase their creations. Depending on the number of entries and level of public interest, the panel may decide to award a second prize in any individual category and/or to increase the amount awarded.
Since students who are well informed would be in a better position to create a powerful and relevant piece of art, members of Life Society will be available upon request to make presentations about the society, the pro-life art competition, and various life topics. For more information or to enter the competition âLife: The Ultimate Work of Artâ please contact Life Society, Societies Office, Ăras na Mac LĂ©inn, E-mail: lifesoc@socs.nuigalway.ie Phone: 0876217702 (auditor).
