New romantic comedy with a twist.
In 1976, Sunny Jacobs was sent to prison when she was convicted of the murder of two policemen in Florida. Her partner Jesse was sent to the electric chair for the same crime - but they were both innocent. Sunny spent 17 years in jail - five of those years on death row; she went in a young mother, a daughter and a wife and when she came out, she was a grandmother, an orphan and a widow when she was eventually released from prison.
In Pringle's case, two police officers were killed in a shootout following a bank robbery in Ballaghdereen, Ireland. The perpetrators fled the scene. Pringle was later picked up by police and charged with the crime, despite the fact that there was no evidence linking him to it. At his trial, police officers falsely claimed that he had confessed to the robbery during interrogation. Pringle was sentenced to death, despite the fact that when another officer was asked to identify the man he had seen at the scene of the crime, he pointed not at Pringle but at a bystander in the public gallery. He served almost 15 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
Pringle and Jacobs met in Ireland in 1998 while Jacobs was speaking at an event sponsored by Amnesty International. Although the details of their individual cases were different, they saw many similarities in their experiences. Together they now travel the world campaigning against the death penalty. Since their release they have become aware of the multitude of injustices contained in their cases, leading Jacobs to declare, "The problem with the justice system as it was and as it remains, is there's no accountability. They can do that to a person and then say, 'Oh well, made a mistake'."
This fascinating talk will be presented by Professor William A. Schabas, Director of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, Galway. Professor Schabas is a passionate advocate of the abolition of the death penalty in international law and has written extensively on this subject. He was involved in the recent establishement of the Death Penalty Research Centre in China.
