Human rights and the environment seem to support and bolster each otherâs aims and goals so obviously that a discussion of the links between these two fields might almost seem moot. Although great strides were made by the international community in the 1970s with official recognition of the common ground between human rights protection and protection of the environment, little progress has been made since then. In fact, this position has been somewhat reversed in modern times. This talk will explore the âoldâ connection that was made between human rights and the environment, while connecting that with the ânewâ present position of viewing them as separate and distinct fields with no positive area of overlap. It will also highlight some ideas that may be âborrowedâ to make the international position more reflective of current realities and needs before finishing with a look at the portrayal of the link between human rights and the environment in contemporary culture.
This talk will be given by Tara Smith who is the Connect Doctoral Research Fellow at the Irish Centre for Human Rights. She is a qualified Attorney-at-Law and has completed her LL.M in International Human Rights Law.
Previously, she has worked as a Research Fellow at the International Institute for Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC), in Siracusa, Italy.
