'H3' is a universal story of endurance and courage set inside Europe's most secure prison, the Maze prison in Northern Ireland. Here, in H3 - the bleakest of all the H-blocks - a group of young republican prisoners hold out for what they believe in, refusing to be labeled as criminals or co-operate with prison authorities. However, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is determined that these Republican prisoners will be treated like all the other common criminals in British jails, ending a special regime which allowed the inmates political status to organise life inside the jail along POW lines
Life in the 21st Century is all about sex. From being bombarded by sexual images in the media to hearing conversations about sex on a daily basis, sex is everywhere. In the 1980s, we saw the rise of feminism and in particular, sex-positive feminism. This movement believed that sexual freedom is a key component of womenâs freedom and thus a key component of the feminist movement. They particularly opposed any attempts to control sexual activities between consenting adults. On the other end of the feminism spectrum, we have the idea that by promoting sexual freedom and allowing for womenâs sexual expression we are opening the door for pornography and harming the progress of womenâs freedom.
Nowadays, we have seen a new popularised form of sex-positive female expression, where women show their confidence and sexuality dressing provocatively. By personifying a stereotype, are women really expressing themselves sexually? Can this really be regarded as empowering women when ultimately itâs benefiting men? Even more concerning is the attitude this displays to sex in todayâs society. Does this approach encourage a healthier attitude to sex in modern culture? Practically speaking, hasnât this culture led to a rise in unsafe sex and unhealthy sexual practices leading to infections and diseases for many people?
Or is it right that women should be allowed to express themselves in any way they wish, regardless of how little clothes that involves? Is this not the ultimate defiance of social norms and as such, truly liberating? And as regards sex, shouldnât consenting adults who enjoy having sex with many partners be free to do so? Lit & Deb explores these issues, come along and see them laid bare. Speaking at this debate will be noted writer in the field of feminism Ellie Levenson and twice winner of the 'Best British or Irish Blog' Zoe Margolis.
