The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is the largest, voluntary, charitable organisation in Ireland. Its is a society that is working for social justice and the creation of a more just, caring nation. The aim of the St Vincent de Paul Society is to tackle poverty in all its forms through the provision of practical assistance to those in need. SVP has seen a huge increase in people calling on us for help in regions like Dublin, Cork and the Galway. In Dublin alone, SVP have recieved almost a 100% increase in calls for assistance over the last two years . Many of these calls are coming from families with young children; in fact 65% of calls this year have come from parents with young families who requesting help to pay for food, heating, mortgage payments or other basic necessities. (svp.ie) We are a relatively small society on campus but are looking to expand and grow and help those less well off in Galway. We organise various fundraising activities throughout the year and also arrange visits to the St. Francis nursing home once a week. All of the money we raise goes to families in need around Galway City. Our meetings are every Monday evening at 6pm in the library of the College Chapel. Everyone is welcome! Or if you see us around campus, please support! |
S.V.P. soc asks NUIG’s students for help with the Christmas Appeal
by Kevin Mc Cague
The NUI Galway Saint Vincent de Paul Society is organising a number of events in the run-up to the Christmas season. Traditionally the busiest time for the organisation across Ireland, S.V.P. Soc wants to give fellow students the chance to contribute in the same generous way as the wider community.
More than ever, families in the Galway area are suffering from the kind of economic deprivation that means that, perhaps for the first time, they will not be able to celebrate Christmas in a way that most of us take for granted. We hope that the ideas we’ve come up with will allow the student body to successfully and inventively help to alleviate the tough situation for several families.
On this Wednesday 17th November, the society will be set up in Aras na Mac Leinn, from 11.30am-3pm. giving information about the appeals that will take place the following week; specifically, we will have a list of the items that would not be too expensive, yet ideal for a colourful Christmas hamper that would help a family through the holiday period. The hamper is a chance to put your inventiveness to good work and to put the price of a tin of beans or two into an attractive gift.
A ‘giving tree’ will also be located on campus. Recognising the difficult financial situation of most students, the ‘giving tree’ allows as many people as possible to make a small donation towards a gift to a child who would benefit greatly from it.
The collection of these items will take place on Wednesday 24th November, 1pm-3.30pm, Large Acoustic Room, Aras na Mac Leinn.
Keep an eye out for posters around campus, or email the society at svp@socs.nuigalway.ie
